The fight against Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is at a critical point all over the world. Global populations have been forced to come up with various strategies to ease the strain the pandemic has visited upon fragile health systems and social structures.

It is vital to note that as much as children do not represent a high-risk group for direct COVID-19 fatality, the pandemic posts far-reaching secondary impacts that heighten risks to their wellbeing.

To play their part in fighting the scourge and enhancing the wellbeing of children, the Rotary Club of Nairobi North (RCNN) donated foodstuff worth over Kshs. 15,000 to Umbrella of Homes for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Kahawa West, July 2020. This was together with an additional contribution from the 41st Rotary Sunshine rally committee.

The donations included dried foodstuff, vegetables as well as sanitary pads, underclothes, and mosquito nets for all the children in the homes.

Accompanied by Rotarians of Nairobi North and Rotaractors of the University of Nairobi to the home, the 41st Sunshine Rally Fundraising Chair, and a Rotarian of Nairobi North, Ms. Furaha Wanjiru assured the home for continuous support from both RCNN and Rotaract Club of the University of Nairobi.

She further urged the teenage boys and girls to abide by their education and strive to be vibrant members of society.

“It is gratifying to see healthy boys and girls who are focused and eager to continue with their studies when schools resume,” said Rotarian Furaha.

While receiving the donations on behalf of the home, the Director, Mr. Boaz Onyango thanked RCNN for their continuous support saying “your donations are timely and will go a long way in lessening the strain caused by the Coronavirus.”

The donation follows an earlier initiative by RCNN towards Elroi Children Home in Komarock through the District 9212 Rotary Foundation Committee in May 2020. The initiative estimated at USD 2,200 was geared towards minor repairs of the roof, painting, and purchase of consumables for the home.

Upon the visit to the home by IPP Meshack Omari, PP Evans Obuya among other Nairobi North Rotarians, they established that the humble home was in need of basic resources especially educational material and clothing seeing that 82% of the children are school going children (5 years – 21 years).

The donation to the home included food, books, clothing, and sanitary pads. The sanitary pad packs that included underclothes for the girls will last them for one year.

The group reported that the children were touched by the Club’s generosity and were appreciative of the donations. “The experience was extremely moving and it was difficult holding back a tear or two! May you all be truly and abundantly blessed!,” reported IPP Meshack to the Club’s WhatsApp group.

To ensure the steadiness and sustainability of the two homes, Umbrella and Elroi Children Homes, RCNN has committed to stand with them in a bid to ensure that every child in the Homes gets a fair chance to succeed in life.

The Rotaract Club of The University of Nairobi under the guidance of RCNN has scheduled quarterly visits for the year 2020/2021 to the homes where the Rotaractors will continue to carry out mentorship programs and fun activities for the children. The Club will also carry out fundraising initiatives from time to time to support the homes.
