Watamu Is a Three Letter Word: DCA!

By Mona Ombogo

DCA. DCA. DCA.

Woke up with a slight cold today. I don’t get colds unless I am extremely fatigued or it’s freezing outside. I can tick two for two of those circumstances. Can you guess what my remedy would be? DCA!!

Why? Well, for one the yummy heat of the Coast. And two, the vacation. Heat and a vacation, that’s what I need. I’m pretty sure I’m not on my own, right? Question is, have you secured your DCA 2024 slot?

If you have, read on, to get even more excited about why this is a must attend event. If you haven’t, read on to see what you will be missing if you don’t book now.

This is our final (ish) installment of the Watamu Twasija series. Today we zero in on DCA itself, the last four reasons why Watamu should already be in your calendar. If you didn’t read the first six, please run back and check them out here:

Whether by land or by sea, air or by rail…  Watamu Is a Three Letter Word: DCA!

Here is why:

6. Of Networks and Networths — You know what they say, your network is your networth. It sounds like a cliché but it’s true. DCA attracts hundreds of Rotarians, Rotaractors and guests from across, not just Kenya but the East African Region. The first DCA I attended in Diani (2022), my mind was blown. I was a brand-new Rotarian, and so to interact with this multitude of talented, high value, resourceful, diverse group of people with a mission to serve mesmerized me. In this space, we truly are one family and the connections we make are lifelong, for business, collaboration, friendship and service. My life was altered in Diani, which is why I purpose never to miss a single DCA.

7. Of Business Opportunities and Great Buys — There is this lovely tradition which takes place at DCA, the Friendship Village. This is where Rotarians and guests get to display their businesses and services to all the attendees of the conference. It’s a sure-fire way to find ready customers in a place where trust and family already exists. Vendors have sold out their goods and gotten pre-orders for services, ideas have been shared and partnerships have been brokered. And, as a buyer, you get amazing deals from Rotary pins to handbags, shoes, real estate opportunities, vacations, even wine from across the globe. It’s honestly one of my favourite spots during DCA.

8. Of Iconic Speakers — Knowledge is wealth.  At DCA, not only do we get to learn amazing things about Rotary, we also gain knowledge to take with us into life. 2022 Diani was grazed by a renowned filmmaker talking about building a business from scratch in a new unexplored field. I still refer to that talk for inspiration today.  2023 had guests from Rotary International talking about Foundation and how to get global grants and partnerships from international clubs. This year my club has locked one global grant and is in the process of applying for another! When I say knowledge is wealth, it’s not just a euphemism, DCA makes it true.

9. Of Great Events – DG’s cocktail, Opening Ceremony, Award Ceremony, Golf Tournament, DG’s Concert, these are all events we have been taken part in during DCA. And the bar is always raised higher. Not only do you indulge in great food, great music and an electric atmosphere, the company is out of this world. There are few things as exhilarating as volunteers finally taking the time to say, ‘well done’ to each other, honour those who stood out in the Rotary year and just have a good old time! Electric. Diani and Addis, the two DCAs I have attended, definitely mark memorable moments in my life. Worth every dime and every second.
