Ethiopia surpassed its record for planting the highest number of trees in a day as part of the country’s campaign to counter the effects of deforestation and climate change. In July 2023 Ethiopians planted more than 500 million trees in a day.

The previous record set in July 2019 was more than 350 million trees planted in a day, resulting in the country setting a world record, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. Ethiopia broke the world record held by India since 2016, for the most trees planted in one day and which stood at 50 million trees, according to UNEP.

“Our goal is to break our record!’’ Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said before the July 2023 campaign. “The issue of green footprint is a matter of protecting, respecting and enriching Ethiopia. It’s about changing history. It is a matter of survival for generations.’’

Researchers found that tree restoration was among the most effective strategies for climate change mitigation. They show that the global potential tree coverage stands at 4.4 billion hectares of canopy under the current climate. Planting trees is therefore considered the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to the United Nations agency.

Under the Rotary Fellowship of Urban Gardening (RFUG), Rotarians in Ethiopia organized a Family Green Day event, aimed at bringing families together to participate in various activities that promote sustainability and enhance natural surroundings.

“We strongly believe in the importance of environmental conservation and community engagement,’’ according to RFUG.

Activities during the Family Green Day included tree planting to contribute to the reforestation efforts and flower bed creation to enhance the beauty of the surrounding areas. This gave families an opportunity to showcase their creativity and contribute to a more vibrant and colourful environment.

There was also building of green ponds to promote sustainable water management and create habitats for aquatic life. This activity provided a hands-on learning experience for both children and adults. Participants were also engaged in the rewarding experience of harvesting fresh vegetables from a community garden.

Throughout the day, there was music playing in the background to enhance the festive atmosphere, while organic homemade beverages were served to keep the participants refreshed and energized.

“Each tree we have planted today is an investment in the well-being of the present and future generations.,’’ according to the Rotary Ethiopia Country Chair Hanna Abebe. “It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and our commitment to preserving the natural world. It is a small act that can make a big difference.’’

Here is excerpt of a the Country Chair’s speech during the occasion.

My fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors.

Today, we have gathered here to celebrate an act of great significance – the planting of trees. It is essential that we remember the importance of trees and their role in sustaining life on our planet.

Trees are not merely objects of beauty; they are the lungs of our earth, purifying the air we breathe by absorbing harmful pollutants and releasing oxygen. They provide shade and shelter to countless species, creating habitats for birds, insects, and animals. Trees also play a crucial role in preventing soil erosion, conserving water, and mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.

Imagine we might be somewhere else, but we choose to contribute to the environment and make a positive impact on our community. we are here together today, we are taking a step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Each tree we plant today is an investment in the well-being of the present and future generations. It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and our commitment to preserving the natural world. It is a small act that can make a big difference. Imagine the impact if every person on this planet planted just one tree!

So, let us not underestimate the power of our actions. Let us plant trees not only for ourselves but also for our children and grandchildren. Let us create a legacy of greenery that will thrive long after we are gone.

I urge you all to take part in this noble cause. Plant a tree, nurture it, and watch it grow. Encourage others to do the same. Together, let us be guardians of our environment, protectors of our planet, and advocates for a sustainable future.
