More Impact In Schools

Leonard Ithau

Dear Rotary Family,

As the September sun rises, we find ourselves in the embrace of Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month. It’s a time to reflect on the power of knowledge and the gift of literacy, fundamental rights that we often take for granted. Did you know that more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? This staggering statistic represents 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Yet, through our collective efforts, we can be the driving force that changes this reality.

At Rotary, our commitment to education knows no bounds. Our mission is clear: to empower communities to provide basic education and literacy for all. This encompasses not only eradicating illiteracy but also reducing gender disparity in education and increasing impact. We are dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and giving every individual the chance to read, write, and thrive.

In our District 9212, we have consistently made strides in the focus area of education. Many of our projects are already situated in schools, but now it’s time to go above and beyond. We must create comprehensive solutions that address multiple challenges simultaneously – from ensuring clean water and proper sanitation (WASH) facilities to promoting digital literacy, fighting diseases, and providing access to books. By collaborating with schools, we can achieve sustainable change that reaches beyond the classroom, lifting communities out of poverty.

Speaking of collaboration, the essence of Rotary lies in unity and collective impact. Let us harmonize our efforts to create bigger and more impactful projects. Together, we can achieve what no single club could accomplish alone. Our district spans four countries, but we are bound by a common purpose. As we come together, we prove that we are not just four countries; we are one united force for good.

I am thrilled to announce that the DG-PHF Matching offer continues until October 31, 2023. For those ready to become Paul Harris Fellows by contributing USD 500, your generous commitment will be matched by me. This initiative contributes to the Rotary Foundation, and with our target of raising 1 million dollars for TRF, each contribution brings us closer to making an indelible impact on lives around the world. Keep giving through the Jenga Foundation portal and be part of this remarkable journey.

Also, a reminder to register for the upcoming Magical Watamu District conference https://dca2024.rotary9212.org/. This is a unique opportunity to connect, learn, and be inspired by fellow Rotarians as we navigate the path to greater service and change.

Finally, let’s reaffirm our dedication to eradicating polio. Participate in the End Polio Now initiative by learning about polio, raising awareness, contributing to the TRF Polio fund, and joining vaccination activities alongside our Ministries of Health. Every step we take, and every contribution we make, brings us closer to a polio-free world.

As we step into September, let’s remember that education and literacy are the cornerstones of progress. By supporting these ideals and working together as one, we have the power to create lasting change that resonates through generations.

Thank you all for your relentless commitment to Rotary’s vision.
