Rotary Muoroto Water Project Launch – August 1, 2020

Arising from the on-going Coronavirus Pandemic, “COVID-19”, the County of Mombasa created an emergency response program geared towards assisting needy citizens. The County appointed a COVID-19 committee led by Rotarian Abdul Samji as chair of the said committee. Rotarians in response to the need of the hour, and also from the recognition of the appointment of a Rotarian as chair, resolved to participate in the COVID-19 emergency response efforts.


The County thereafter engaged The Rotary Club of Mombasa as a friend, partner, and supporter of its Corporate Social Responsibility works within the County, and the COVID-19 committee made suggestions to Rotary Club of Mombasa to participate by way of drilling of boreholes to benefit those in need.


The County Government of Mombasa proposed that a borehole be drilled at the Mary Cliff Primary School in Muoroto, Mombasa.The Rotary Club of Mombasa has, in conjunction with the Mombasa Maize Millers Limited, represented by Rotarian Mohamed Islam, drilled a borehole and equipped it to completion at the said location, which borehole is fully commissioned and handed over in working condition and ready to supply free water to benefit 15,000 families of the Muoroto area on 1st August 2020. The County shall henceforth take full charge of all expenses, costs, and charges for services in repair and maintenance of the borehole, and the decisions concerning the distribution of water at any given time.

The cost of the said project is 2.5 Million Kenya Shillings and the Club is honoured with the presence of H.E Hassan Ali Joho, EGH
Governor, Mombasa County as the Chief Guest accompanied by Hon Abdulswamad Nassir Member of Parliament for the area and Mr. Taufiq Balala the County Executive Member in Charge of Water and Sanitation. The Rotary Club of Mombasa is represented by the Rotary Water Team comprising of Mohamed Ahmed Ali Islam, Bhupinder Singh, Mohamed Islam, and Abdulghafur Pasta.

The Rotary Club members are appreciative of the Medical Trust Fund represented by Rotarian Musti Mamujee together with the required Rotary Water Team for being able to raise the funds and construct the borehole plus the extensive multiple water supply systems. The Governor also presented an appreciation award to Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali Islam for his sterling efforts, being a frontliner in this noble project.
