Rotary Club of Stoni Athi Completes 2024 Blood Drive
By Eric Ombok
Rotary Club of Stoni Athi has completed a successful 2024 blood drive that managed to collect 765 pints, compared with a target of 700 pints.
This has the potential to save more than 3,000 lives as one pint of blood – 450 millilitres – is sufficient for four people, Rotary Club of Stoni Athi President Elect Dr. Steve Adudans said.
“Every 10 minutes, in Kenya, seven Kenyans need blood,’’ Dr. Adudans said.
The collection was done from six sites within Machakos County including Mavuno Church, Kapa Oil Refineries, Daystar University, KAG University, Umma University and Machakos County Assembly.
Members of Embu County Assembly, who were on a trip to Machakos County Assembly, also participated in the blood drive. Deputy Speaker of Embu County Ibrahim Swaleh, who is a regular blood donor, urged more people to participate in such exercises not just to save lives of others but also to rejuvenate their own bodies as blood that is donated is replenished in about three months.
“We want to respond to the community’s persistent problems and one of the key things that we noted in Machakos is a blood shortage,’’ Rotary Club of Stoni Athi President Judie Njumwah said. “We are mobilizing the community, professionals, church members, students and people in different sectors of work to just come together and donate blood toward a worthy cause.’’
Beneficiaries of the blood drive will include Machakos Level Five Hospital’s blood bank and other health facilities in the county, Majority Leader in the Machakos County Assembly Nzioka Wangoni said.
