About 21 Rotary and Rotaract Clubs at the Kenyan Coast partnered with the International Medical Aid (IMA), Kongowea Primary School, Kongowea Catholic Church and Kongowea Ward Member of County Assembly Samuel Mwaura to hold a medical camp.
“We organized a remarkable free medical camp at Kongowea Primary School, providing much-needed healthcare services to those in need,’’ said Rotary Club of Mombasa Nyali President Njau Chege. “The dedicated medical professionals from the IMA and volunteers worked tirelessly, leaving no stone unturned in their commitment to improving lives.’’
More than 400 residents benefitted from the medical camp. About 31 patients received dental extractions, some requiring multiple procedures. Additionally, 53 consultations were conducted, addressing various oral health concerns.
In the optical department, 68 consultations were carried out, ensuring that individuals received the necessary eye care. Furthermore, 20 individuals were fitted with eye frames and received discounts at Light House for their lenses.
“This is our second medical camp in Nyali Constituency, in the last one Rotary year,’’ said Rose Chege, Rotary’s Regional Coordinator at the coast. IMA and the Rotary Coastal Clubs also donated Dignity packs to Kongowea Secondary School to mark the World Menstrual Day.
“Our goal is to improve accessibility to healthcare,’’ IMA’s Senior Program Menter Christabel Njeru said. “In doing this we organize community medical clinics and hygiene education sessions.’’
Roger Voter and Homayon Ghassemi founded International Medical Aid during their final year at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. As part of their senior thesis, Ghassemi and Voter began investigating the root causes of healthcare inequality in the developing world and worked to identify the populations most at risk. Ghassemi and Voter submitted their final thesis in June of 2012 after IMA’s very first healthcare campaign in Quito, Ecuador. IMA is a not-for-profit organization.
