E-Waste: The Forgotten Segment of Our Environment
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre based in Nairobi is a social enterprise with the aim of ensuring safe disposal of electrical and electronic waste for a safe environment and in extension, human health.
The WEEE Centre adheres to the highest global standards on safe disposals and holds ISO 14001:2015 and 9001:2015 certifications. As the only recycling facility licensed by The National Environmental Management Authority, WEEE Centre has handled more than 10,000 tons of e-waste and serves over 18 African countries.
WEEE Centre is run by Bonnie Mbithi, one of the younger members of the Rotary Club of Syokimau who currently serves as the club’s New Generations Director. The company, which is in line with Rotary’s newest area of focus, the environment, hosted Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto on July 15, 2020.
The Deputy President visited the WEEE Centre to appreciate the work done to protect the environment and health of citizens indirectly. Measures should be put in place on the disposal of electronic waste. One of the focus areas is having a legislative framework to ensure a conducive environment for safe recycling of e-waste in the nation, he said during the visit. In the long run, the involvement of the government in safe e-waste disposal through legislation will contribute greatly to the economy, protection of the environment as well as human health.
Bonnie is passionate about sharing on how we all have a role to play to manage e-waste. This is through speaking opportunities in Rotary Clubs, companies, and hosting groups at the WEEE Center. Some of the groups hosted include Rotaract Clubs who at a young age can become champions of change in their communities.
Now that the environment is one of the areas of focus, Rotary has more opportunities to impact our communities through environmental projects and partner with companies like WEEE Center.
