The Third Mt. Kenya Sunshine Rally: A Day of Sunshine

By Brian Mteeve

The third Mt. Kenya Sunshine Rally has once again brought joy and excitement to differently-abled children, proving that community spirit and collaboration can create magical moments.

Held at the University of Embu at the end of March, this annual event has grown since its inception in 2023 at Kirinyaga University and it continues to shine brightly in the hearts of many.

Planning for this year’s rally was a collective effort that involved extensive meetings, fundraising initiatives and dedicated teamwork. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and friends from clubs across the Mt. Kenya region came together, raising funds through weekly fellowships, charity events and generous sponsorships.

Notably, the Rotary Club of Embu, in collaboration with the Mt. Kenya Sunshine Rally Planning Committee, hosted a Charity Golf event to support the fundraising efforts. Merchandise sales also contributed to the cause, allowing us to gather resources to support our young participants.

A record-breaking attendance
On the day of the event, 2,424 children from 91 schools arrived, bringing with them a spectrum of challenges including physical disabilities, autism, vision impairment and more. We had more than 40 participating Rotary, Rotaract & Interactor Clubs who worked cohesively to receive them. Despite the rainy season, the weather was surprisingly friendly. It was such a “Sunshine Day”

The event was a vibrant celebration of talent, with children showcasing their crafts and performances, including songs and dances. Smiles lit up the faces of every participant, reminding us of the importance of joy and inclusion.

“I wish to register our appreciation for the wonderful day; the learners had a memorable occasion,’’ said Steve, a representative of St. Monica Embu Special School.

“Long live the Sunshine Rally!” said Madam Grace, Principal of Kambungu Special School

As we reflect on this successful event, we invite stakeholders to support this initiative both in kind and financially. Donations will be accepted throughout the year via the respective clubs or through mobile money sent to PAYBILL: 400200; ACCOUNT: 40014575. We also urge the government to recognize the importance of such events and to support schools dedicated to differently-abled children, focusing on fun and extracurricular activities. We also call for better recognition and appreciation for the teachers and caregivers who tirelessly support these children.

As we look ahead, we are excited for the next rally set for May 3, 2025, organized by the Nairobi and Rift regions. Together, let’s continue to spread joy and sunshine to children in need!
