Top students learn life’s lessons from The Lion King
When we talk of mentorship we think of it as a learning and development partnership between someone with vast experience and someone who wants to learn. The person with experience often exposes the protégé to opportunities and experiences that empower them. These exposures take very many forms. Interaction with the mentor is also necessary to gain proficiency with/in cultural tools.
When it comes to mentoring children however, one has to be creative because formal talks often bore them and take it as only theory just as the lessons they have on a daily basis.
The Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road organized for family and youth social day which was also a creative way of mentorship to their adopted school top achievers and as way for parents to be with their children as they learnt valuable lessons from the movie.
In attendance was children from as young as 8 months, preschool, junior school, senior school and college student not leaving out the parents, making it a real family social. The feeling was nostalgic for club members.
Lessons learnt from The Lion King were vast from the
- Value of True friendships; Nalia trusted Simba to be alive and went to lengths to bring him back.
- Selflessness; we do things for others without thinking of ourselves (Pumba).
- Importance of questioning things…it protects one from being misled even by family (Simba and Uncle).
- Grief shatters everyone even young ones
- Importance of dealing with challenges other than running
- Pick your battles carefully(When Simba tried fighting Hyenas)
- The circle of life applies to humans too. We all have a purpose in the world and life ends to all.
- The importance of positive attitude and finding happiness even in adversity…’Hakuna Matata’
- As much as leadership could be innate mentorship brings it out and sharpens it. Simba kept referring to Mufasa the dad’s teachings.
The pupils from Kariobangi North Primary School had an experience to share with the other schoolmates and hopefully motivate others to work harder and promote healthy competition.
The movie was a beautiful way for the children to make new friends and to learn from it. It made a good conversation for the week to come on the dinner table.
Wow!!! Beautiful story here and a super creative way to do mentorship. So happy for the lessons learnt and ot just by the kids but for us Rotarians as well. The team work at Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road was exemplary.
