Rotary District 9212 Officials Join RC Lamu as It Sets Sail For New Rotary Year

By Pauline Awuor
Rotary Club of Lamu conducted a spectacular, sailor-themed installation event in June. Despite being just two years old, the club, known as the Sailors, has established a unique tradition of holding its installations in the ocean using catamaran boats and specially made Lamu dhows, adding a distinctive touch.
The exchange of the chain took place between the Immediate Past President Gilbert Monyoncho and President Leonard Ouma. The event was graced by the District 9212 Executive Committee of 2023-2024 led by District Governor Leonard Ithau and District Governor Nominee Wairimu Njage.

Other attendees from the District included Janet Mathenge (District Secretary), Jeff Gitau (Finance Chair), Rose Chege (District Community Chair), James Mwangi (Membership Chair), and Sam Alosa (District Legal Advisor). Additionally, representatives from 14 Rotary clubs and two Rotaract clubs attended the event.

The white dress code was complemented by the sailors’ scarves, with attendees looking stunning in their outfits as they sailed the waters. In conclusion, RC Lamu recognized various honors and exchanged their sailors’ flags with Rotarians and Rotaract clubs that attended the auspicious ceremony.

District Governor Leonard Ithau shared a memorable moment from Lamu. He recalled receiving the news of his appointment as District Governor while in Lamu and being uncertain if he would accept the position. It was also in Lamu that he reunited with the District Executive Committee as the “We Are One” year came to an end.
Newly installed President Leonard Ouma emphasized the importance of supporting their signature project, Bahati Njema Primary School, which currently has 258 students. During his tenure, the club intends to establish a fully equipped sports center, construct toilets for both teachers and students, clearing and fencing the school compound. For the long-term, they aim to establish a fully equipped library, construct an administration block and build a modern kitchen.

“By supporting these events and donating to Bahati Njema Primary School, we can help improve the lives of these children and celebrate our unity and commitment to service,’’ according to RC Lamu.
