Rotary Clubs of Gachie, Embu Join Weekly Tree Planting Program
The Rotary Club of Gachie launched its weekly tree-planting program on July 23, 2020. The following day, the Rotary Club of Embu joined the Adopt-a River campaign, which seeks to reach a national tree coverage of 10% as stipulated by the United Nations Environment Programme.
The two events were in response to an invitation by the Adopt-a-River initiative committee for clubs to join the program and be part of Rotary’s new area of focus, supporting the environment. The committee has a goal of planting at least 2 billion tree seedlings before 2022, with a focus on indigenous and fruit seedlings.
Rotary Club of Embu planted100 fruit seedlings. Rotary Club of Gachie planted 50 indigenous tree seedlings, 130 fruit trees and 20 flower tree seedlings
“We are and will continue to be dedicated to the improvement of the environment. We therefore take this opportunity to assure you that what you started will continue in our region,” Rotary Club of Embu President Joe Kiboi said.
To date, a total of 18,488 tree seedlings have been planted under the Adopt-a-River initiative and the committee continues to urge more stakeholders to join in and contribute in saving the environment.
The environment needs saving from chemicals pollution, disposal of plastics, deforestation, biodiversity loss among other factors. Every human being has the responsibility to be a good steward of the environment by taking charge and doing everything in their power to conserve it and influence others to do the right thing as far as taking care of the environment is concerned.
