Rotary Club Of Limuru Adopts Umoja Primary SCHOOL
Rotary Club of Limuru has intentionally made plans to address the needs of the community around its pivot (Limuru country club) where the club meets every Thursday from 6:30pm and also in Limuru sub-county. Designing service projects that meet these needs has become the Club’s number one priority.
Umoja Primary School located one kilometre from the pivot, and which hosts about 500 students most of them coming from the beautiful tea estates where their guardians are tea pickers and very needy, falls into that category.
In the Rotary year 2017/2018, RC Limuru decided to adopt the school with the aim of improving its academic performance through two of Rotary’s areas of focus I.e. Basic Education & Literacy and Water & Sanitation.
To date, RC Limuru has held several projects in the school that have included; mentorship forums for the kids in upper primary, Donated revisions text books, Repainted the school blackboards, and constructed a kitchen for school (previously the kids meals were being cooked out in the open under the scorching sun or the misty Limuru weather, not forgetting the rainy season). The Club has also held a hand wash exercise and disease prevention awareness forum for the children and planted trees in the school.
In this Rotary year 2019/2020, as a way to motivate the pupils to elevate their game in academic performance, the club plans to sponsor an educational trip for class 8 candidates, hold a prize giving ceremony for top and most improved pupils (this has never been done before in the school for as long as the current management & pupils can remember) and donate basic stationery (geometrical sets, pencils & rulers) to class 8 pupils during KCPE exams plus meals for the 3 days. RC Limuru also plans to construct a toilet facility for the girls in the school as they are currently sharing with teachers – (this will attract our very first grant as a club and we are excited)!!!!
Above are the first of the many local community needs that we are meeting and plan to meet in future as a club. Many more are happening and others are in the pipeline for example our Maternal & Child health projects supporting local health centres, environment conservation, Economic empowerment etc.
