Rotary Club of Kilindini Celebrates 51 Years of Service
By Pauline Awuor
The Rotary Club of Kilindini celebrated 51 years of dedicated service to the community in March.
The club has undertaken numerous impactful projects, with drilling of boreholes standing out as their flagship endeavor. This year, 2024, Rotarians at the club have drilled 14 boreholes across the north and south coasts of Kenya, benefiting approximately 28,340 individuals.
This year, the club is set to commission another borehole in Changamwe, Mombasa County, expected to serve around 800 students in the area.
The process of identifying suitable locations for boreholes involves close collaboration with local communities. Once requests are received, surveys are conducted. Construction takes a span of two weeks, culminating in a celebratory event where the club, community members, and beneficiaries rejoice in their collective success. As part of their commitment, the Rotary Club of Kilindini also provides food packages during these celebrations.
Community involvement extends beyond the construction phase, with individuals from the community appointed to oversee the maintenance of boreholes. Water access is regulated, with daily opening hours in the morning and evening, ensuring equitable distribution. Some community members engage in water resale, boosting their economic well-being.
To sustain these vital projects, the Rotary Club of Kilindini regularly services the boreholes, ensuring their continued functionality. This proactive approach enhances the long-term viability of the initiatives, benefiting generations to come. Most of the funding for the projects comes from well-wishers in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada under the leadership of Club President Anil Dodhia.
The Rotary Club of Kilindini remains steadfast in its commitment to making a positive impact on the world. Their dedication to providing clean water and implementing other impactful projects reflects their unwavering mission to uplift communities and transform lives.
Among the guests who attended the 51st anniversary celebration was three Lions Clubs.
