Rotary Club of Kikuyu Leads Kenya in New Members INDUCTION
It was such a blissful moment when Dr. Joe Kamau -The District Membership Chair- read the message from DG Joe Otin, stating that RC Kikuyu has had the highest number of new Rotarians inducted in one sitting in Kenya.
“Thank you President George K. Ngotho for elevating your game by inducting 6 new members, the highest in Kenya yet.”
–DG Joe Otin
At RCK, the induction is a long process, starting with the expression of interest from the aspiring Rotarians. The aspiring Rotarians go through a training program where they learn all they need to know about rotary. During the training period, the aspirants are supposed to attend at least one Rotary function where they get a feel of the type of projects we do.
Such efforts helps the club in getting the new Rotarians engaged, helps in retention of the new members. These are some of the things highlighted as firsts in the country by the District Membership Chair Dr. Joe Kamau.
How did we do it, you might ask?
Well! First is by inviting as many guests. This helps to create awareness about Rotary and RCK. Secondly is the training program. Once a guest indicates the willingness to join, they get into a membership class that helps them remain engaged in club matters as they await the induction date. Finally, we try as much as possible to have lots of fun in our club.
Key takeaways from Dr. Joe Kamau
Listening to Dr. Joe, you can’t help but realize that there is a wind of change blowing, especially in the way club meetings are held.
‘Flexibility’ was the key word in the speech. In order to keep members engaged and to recruit more members, it’s important to tailor clubs to the busy lifestyle of a Rotarian.
The focus on flexibility has led to the creation of new models of Rotary Clubs. Some of the models are:
- eClubs –These are clubs where members will be meeting online. There is no physical meeting point for these members. You just need to login to your clubs online portal and have your fellowship.
- Passport Clubs –these are clubs for those always on the move. However, members of such a club will need to belong to a traditional club where they are required to attend fellowship at least once a month.
- Corporate Clubs –these clubs are for members within the same organizations. Some of the clubs already formed or in the making are –Safaricom Rotary Club with almost 60 members so far; KRA (Yes! Even a national revenue authority can start a rotary club); I&M Bank; and Coca-Cola.
- Course Based Club –these are clubs for people with the same passion. It could be hikers, football lovers (Hope to see a Chelsea FC Fans Rotary Club); Book Lovers; etc.
As you probably have deduced, the aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to join Rotary. To make District 9212 vibrant, we must all focus on adding to our members. The different models will help Rotarians to recruit and allow Rotary Clubs to establish new clubs under them.
