Rotarians Seek Partners For School Mentorship Programme in Mlolongo
By Evelyn Muthoni
At St. Augustine Secondary School, the only public secondary school in Mlolongo, the Rotary Club of Syokimau and teachers at the institution identified several challenges that limit the potential of the more than 1,000 students.
In partnership with the Rotaract Club of Syokimau, Interact Club of St. Augustine Secondary School, Lifespring Chapel Syokimau and Lifespring Chapel Embakasi, the Rotary Club of Syokimau is currently creating a pool of mentors who will act as enthusiastic and able role models. Majority of the mentors are youth so that they can easily relate and build rapport with the students.
“Having variety means the mentorship remains stimulating over time, and hopefully resulting in an impactful and sustainable program,’’ according to the club.
The club expects the mentorship programme to help the students as they go through challenging life transitions, including dealing with stressful changes at home or transitioning to adulthood.
The club has continuously carried out school mentorship at St. Augustine Secondary School since the year 2020. The last mentorship session was in July and the next one is scheduled for September.
The mentorship format involves grouping the students according to their interests and assigning each group at least one mentor. There are also plans to involve the mentors in the school’s weekly guidance and counselling sessions on Thursday evenings.
