In a world often dominated by the buzz of technology and the cacophony of global issues, a ray of hope has emerged from the heart of Bungoma County. The birth of the Rotary Club of Bungoma Central in June 2023 was sown when a group of visionary individuals decided to bring the principles of Rotary International to their local community. The club’s weekly fellowships now light up the serene halls of the Iconic Hotel in Musese Chwele every Saturday from 4pm to 5pm.

The fledgling Rotarians celebrated their club charter last month with the District Governor Leonard as their chief guest. Speaking at the event, DG Ithau encouraged the new Rotarians to take up the mantle to transform their communities through bigger and more impactful projects.

Club charter President Dr. Peter Nyongesa Khakina, in agreement, said that the 33-member strong club is fully committed to taking up service projects in Rotary International’s 7 focus areas. The club has set its sights on training community leaders through a mix of in-person seminars and workshops to foster peace and collaborate with other Rotary clubs in Western Kenya to combat malaria and fight disease. Additionally, they’re tackling the often-overlooked issue of mental health, sensitizing the community and providing much-needed support to those facing mental health challenges.

RC Bungoma Central also plans to construct modern latrines at Chwele Market and drill a borehole to provide clean water to the community, visit maternity wards to bring comfort to new mothers as well as distribute sanitary pads to 500 girls in need. In the Basic Education and Literacy focus area, the Club hopes to implement initiatives that range from supporting school-going orphans with essential needs to providing much-needed assistance to schools that cater to physically and mentally challenged children.
