“Meyazia 27” – The Echo of Courage, The Call to Service
By Hanna Abebe
May 5th. Meyazia 27. A day etched in the heart of every Ethiopian, a day that pulses with the memory of resilience and the triumph of the spirit. It is Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day, a national holiday honoring the “Arbegnoch” ; the fearless men and women who rose up against Italian occupation and secured the return of Emperor Haile Selassie to the throne in 1941.
But this is more than just a historical commemoration. It’s a story that breathes with life, a narrative of defiance and unwavering hope. It’s the tale of a nation that refused to surrender its soul. These patriots chose dignity over fear, freedom over silence, writing their courage onto the very landscape of Ethiopia.
On this day, Ethiopia comes alive with tributes. Government leaders, diplomats, members of the Ethiopian Patriotic Association, and city residents gather at memorial monuments, honoring the veterans of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935–1937). The solemn laying of wreaths is punctuated by the stirring music of the Ethiopian Police Orchestra Brass Band, a symphony of remembrance and pride. At Arat Kilo roundabout monument, gatherings take place, acknowledging the accomplishments and immense sacrifices of these national heroes.
Known also as “Arbegnoch Qen”, this day isn’t simply about remembering the past; it’s about drawing strength from it. The spirit of the “Arbegnoch” isn’t a relic to be admired from afar; it’s a living flame that continues to guide us today. It reminds us that even in the face of overwhelming odds, courage, unity, and a unwavering belief in what is right can prevail.
And so, as Rotarians, we inherit this powerful legacy. We are called to carry their spirit forward, not with weapons of war, but with the tools of peace, love, service, and solidarity. Let us honor the “Arbegnoch” not just with words, but with actions that uplift our communities, defend justice, and build a better future for all Ethiopians. May their courage inspire us to be the “Arbegnoch” of our time, fighting for a world where peace, prosperity, and dignity reign supreme.
Happy Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day “መልካም የአርበኞች ድል ቀን”
