Making Rotary Meetings Fun Through ZUMBA
(“Vunja Mifupa kama meno bado iko…A Zilizopendwa song by Moreno Mbatamba… I guess”) Have you ever heard of Zumba? Well, most people think it’s just a simple bas dance without any proper choreographed moves. Haa I am one of them! According to Wikipedia, Zumba is an exercise fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Pérez during the 1990s. Zumba is a trademark owned by Zumba Fitness, LLC.
The Rotary and Rotaract Club of Ngong Hills led by their dual Rotarian / Rotaractor International Service Director Cedric Mwenebatu shared their ideas to make the Zumba night happen. The actions began and Robert, the trainer requested his DJ to play the music because without music the whole exercise would be boring. We were first taken through a session of warm ups which was quite engaging, making some members exhausted before the main exercise.
After the warm up exercise, the real Zumba fitness began and in the course of the exercise, I had a slight pain on my abdomen, an implication the moves were impactful on my body. The moves were well choreographed, activities quite engaging and time flew.
The turnout was commendable considering it was the first time to have a Zumba night with both clubs; President Martin promised members presents and an opportunity to have Zumba every monthly to allow members and guests unwind from their normal busy schedules. The trainer was gifted with a Certificate and a book and requested to visit in future.
It was quite an eventful evening and while heading back home, all agreed that that Zumba night would be a good change away from the norm of having the normal meetings!
