Kenyan Rotaractors Join Ugandan Peers In One-Million Tree Planting Project
By Elma Kajuju
Rotaractors from Districts 9212 (Kenya, Ethiopia, & South Sudan), Districts 9214 (Uganda & Tanzania) and 9150 (Rwanda & Burundi) joined hands to plant more than 10,000 trees on 37 acres of land in Uganda.
The tree planting took place in Itojo, Ruzinga, Diosecan compound, Kyamate Primary and Secondary School, Standard College School and Kikoni Primary School, all in Ntungamo district, under the support of South Ankole Diocese.
The tree planting exercise is a project of the Rotaract Earth Initiative, an environmental campaign initiated by dedicated Rotaractors in Uganda in April 2015, with the goal of planting one million trees by 2022.
The primary goal of the Rotaract Earth Initiative is to promote environmental conservation by safeguarding natural resources, fostering the development of sustainable energy sources, and reducing pollution to minimize adverse impacts on the environment.
There was also a mentorship session for students at Kyamate Secondary School and Standard Secondary School, to empower them with knowledge and practical skills. This, in turn promoted healthier habits and a heightened sense of responsibility. The impact was twofold: improved health and a burgeoning sense of eco-consciousness.
In support of the Uganda Blood Bank, some of the Rotaractors and partners donated 30 units of blood through a dedicated blood donation drive hosted at the Ntungamo Municipal Council grounds, ensuring a steady supply of vital blood resources for the local community.
These project activities collectively embodied the core values of REI Ntungamo – environmental stewardship, community health, and active civic engagement. Together, they underlined the commitment of Rotaractors to fostering positive change and sustainable progress in Ntungamo and beyond.
