Forever in our Memory
Members of the Rotary Club of Syokimau are still trying to come to terms with the sudden death of Past President (PP) William Muli on August 15, 2019. The news still seems so unreal.
PP William lived the truth and served above self even before he became a Rotarian. He was always fair to all and sought to build bridges for peaceful coexistence. He had a long-standing desire to join Rotary and when he was about to be inducted into RC Langata, he relocated to Syokimau.
For the next two years, he searched for a nearby Rotary club to join. Once he heard about RC Syokimau, he joined the fellowships and later became a member. He was the first inductee of the club as the rest were charter members.
As a new member, PP William hit the ground running. Even though he joined a club of 11 members, he continuously motivated the members and that is one of the main reasons why RC Syokimau is standing strong today.
He accepted to be the club’s third President and by the end of his term, RC Syokimau had become a stable club of 30 members. During his tenure, the club undertook its first global grant project- a borehole in Kyaani, Machakos County.
He steered the club to form close ties with RC Langata and the two clubs undertook projects together. He also personally guided the formation of RC Kitengela and RC Magharibi that are two stable clubs. The club also got recognition during the 2018 District Conference and Assembly. PP William received three awards from the District Governor as one of the outstanding clubs of that year.
With a passion for mentorship and nurturing the young generation, PP William gave his time to Mlolongo Primary School, the only public primary school in the area. He would personally follow up with the headmaster to monitor the progress of the institution. The club is currently constructing and equipping two classrooms at St. Augustine’s Secondary School, which shares a compound with Mlolongo Primary School.
The Rotary District 9212 leadership also recognised PP William’s good deeds and District Governor Nominee, Rotarian Alex Nyaga, challenged RC Syokimau to undertake a project in honour of William. He noted the Past President was very passionate about his community. He initiated several projects in his community with the support of Rotary Clubs in Kenya and in the U.S.
He had an ongoing three-part water project in Nguu Nyumuu. The first part of the project, drilling a community borehole, is complete. The second part is converting the project to be solar-powered rather than electricity-powered because the cost of electricity is too prohibitive for the community. The third part is to lay distribution pipes to the homes of the local community.
The club will undertake the two remaining parts of the project in keeping with PP William’s legacy. We welcome partnership from other Rotary clubs, friends that he involved in his projects and many more Rotary clubs in honouring a great Rotarian.
