Let’s Celebrate The Rotary Factor in Polio-Free Africa
When the bell rang on the World Health Organization corridors to symbolize an important announcement on public health, little did we know that it would usher in celebrations for the Rotary family.
The health authorities announced that Africa is now free from the wild poliovirus. It is a big plus for us especially that it happened in a continent where health infrastructure has a lot of shortcomings.
Rotary International is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradicative Initiative. The initiative’s aim is to have a world free of polio.
The WHO announcement that Africa is now polio free brings the Rotary family closer to its dream of a polio free world. Hence, our popular polio signature statement: “We Are This Close” to eradicating polio.
Rotary’s involvement in this achievement is not only the Global Polio Eradicative Initiative but also the persistence and consistency demonstrated by Rotarians all over the globe for over 30 years to ensure a polio free world.
Rotary clubs have been having community awareness projects in their respective areas and contributing money to the Rotary Foundation for use in the good cause.
Today, polio remains in the Asian continent, specifically in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are not going to relent on our efforts until we wipe out the threat posed by this crippling disease.
Rotary District 9212 through its clubs will continue advocating more synergy toward this noble project. The Rotary factor will soon ensure a world free of polio.
