Rotarians, Rotaractors, Other Partners Participate In Coastal Kenya Menstrual Health Project

By Pauline Awuor

Rotary and Rotaract clubs in Kenya’s Coast Region partnered with several organizations to launch a menstrual health and hygiene program at Kishushe Primary School in May.

The Rotaract clubs-led initiative benefited more than 200 boys and girls between nine and 15 years from five marginalized schools in Taita Taveta County. The girls received menstrual and personal hygiene bags containing three packets of sanitary towels, two panties, two bars of soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste. The boys received personal hygiene kits containing two bars of soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

The project aims to bring together Rotary and Rotaract clubs to work with local leaders, other partners and the community to enhance menstrual and personal hygiene among learners and improve water and sanitation infrastructure in schools within the Coast region. The project also envisions formation of Interact clubs and mentoring learners and facilitators to champion menstrual hygiene and personal hygiene within their schools.

Taita Taveta County Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo, Rotary Coordinator in the Coastregion Lynnet Oketch, Rotaract District Representative Nancy Njeri, and other Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends participated in the initiative and mentorship sessions.

Partners in the project included the county government of Taita Taveta, CHOICE Humanitarian, Kenya Red Cross Society, Big Sister Initiative, Becky’s Pizza and Hilalium and Sons (UR Home Ltd).
